THE TERM "MULLIGAN" TAKES A NEW MEANING....

Oh, Oh... That one stayed
in bounds! We are in trouble!
The Thursday Couples league resumed on Thursday the 28th with 17 people in 8 teams (Allen Robinson ended up paired up with Dayva Spitzer and his wife Kathy in two different teams).

I think I can do
something with that one...
In this Thursday event, each participant gets a mulligan, but no one had ever used it as well as Ricky Marr did Thursday afternoon. With his team (with Ramona Alvarez) already 4 under par after 5 holes, Ricky hit his ball out of bounds right on #6. Ramona followed with  a solid tee shot that took a bad bounce and yes, out of bounds as well. Ramona took her mulligan first and this time, she hit farther right than the first time and ended out of bounds again. It was up to Ricky now, who proceeded to hit his mulligan in bounds and then hit his approach shot to a couple of feet for a tap-in eagle, therefore turning a possible 7 into a 3, a four shot swing that earned his team a first place with a stunning 6 under par for the nine holes played.

Can you believe that? I hate losing
to him! (I actually hate losing
any time.. period!!)
Later, Ricky said, "it was the most fun I've had on a golf course for years, the best part is that we beat Ann Cowan!" (Ann usually gets the best of him). By his account, Ann and Joe Wynn should have won had it not been for the "mulligan" rule, but hey, "I didn't write the rules" he said, "just played by them!" Ann Cowan and Joe Wynn earned 2nd place with a 33. Ann's last comments were, "I don't know what he was doing wrong that he played so good!"

See you on Tuesday (Men's Scramble) and Thursday again (Couples Scramble).

GOLFERS' GALLERY HAS BEEN UPDATED

A QUICK NINE...AGAIN

1. Sorry I had not published anything new in the blog, though I had actually written about different topics, I just could not bring myself to finish anything. But here we are with some fresh news: Elk City Golf Club will soon have a real website. No, we are not cancelling the blog,  we are just going to expand exposure of this great little course.

2. The Elk City Boys Team is playing regionals next Monday in Weatherford. Make some time to go watch them! They would really appreciate support and personal appearance from more than just coaches and family. All of them have been practicing hard to defend their state title, but I am really impressed with the talent -and dedication- of several of them, including: Joby Gray, Keegan Hall, Cody Lake, Brock Walker and Berek Dyson. I am sure you all know them well and better than I do, so I am not going to say other than expect a breakthrough of at least one of them and great scores.
Jordan Willaimson and dad
Mike celebrate Terry Nichols' eagle
putt on #6 during Tuesday's
Scramble

3. The Thursday Couples started last Thursday. It was almost cancelled because of weather, but the weather turned around by the afternoon and 3 couples who "didn't know it was cancelled" (it was never cancelled, we just didn't expect any participation) showed up. So, we go it up and running. Larry Millican and daughter Kelcee won the first night. Thursday Couples will resume on Thursday April 28. With Ann Cowan back in charge, it should be fun!!
I'd be happy too if I
shot my age!

4. Tuesday we held the third Men's Scramble of the season. Despite the weather forecast, thirty players showed up and with the help of Ricki Nagle, we ended up with 7 very closely matched teams. By the faces we saw around the course, I can testify that these men have more fun than anyone I know playing golf (click on "Golfers' Gallery for some new pictures). The team of Jordan Williamson, Terry Nichols, Jeff Smoot and Mike Williamson were the low score with 29; however, there is a "carry over" to May 3rd since this Tuesday the winning team had to win by two shots, and their winning margin was one.

5. The weather has been less than perfect for golf, nonetheless, we've had some play... Hey, this is not a complaint about the weather or the lack of a full golf course, I am bragging about you "diehards"!

6. Congratulations to Bob Griffith who shot 3 strokes under his age! He shot a 70! Surely, if you know the difference between a par and bogey, you can calculate his age. We heard that there was another senior who shot his age as well, we'll find out, corroborate the story and let you know.

7. Playing the ball as it lies and the course as you find it is the only way you can find out if you are improving or not and what your true handicap really is. But that is not the onl way to enjoy yourself. Playing the ball down is also the only way that the USGA will interpret rules in case of a rules question. There is an immediate advantage to moving the ball as you play a round: you don't play out of bad lies, ever. There is a long term disadvantage: you never learn to hit shots from bad lies. The average handicap is 3-5 shots different between playing the ball down and playing preferred lies. If your course and the rules of a tournament allow you to move the ball and you go ahead and do it on a regular basis, you are not cheating or cheating anyone (remember, cheating is an attitude, not an action), but you may be cheating yourself out of learning how to hit certain shots, which to me, is part of playing and enjoying the game at its fullest.

8. As of May 8, we will have tee time services. Members will have preferred times. Most people who know about this, have been supportive, while a few are skeptical that it will work. With time, you will all see that the Board made the right decision for the benfit of all. You can call as of the previous Tuesday. Tee times will be reserved for groups of three or higher, this will allow us to pair up singles and twosomes into larger groups.

9. The tournament season continues this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with a fun tournament that has been labeled as "Welcome Alex Alvarez Golf Tournament"; first, a sincere thank you to all, and especially to those who had the idea; second, and most important, I am only trying to fill the shoes of those who serviced you before me, most recently Cory Smith and for many years Mr. James Ellis, "my neighbor" across the street. They set the standard, and trust me, we have to work hard to not let them and you down. Both Ramona and I thank you all. Let's have some fun!

P.S. "Members' Gallery" has been updated

DONE & COMING UP...

Trey Campbell was captain
of winning team
There was no more carry over for the Tuesday night Men's Scramble, as Trey Campbell, Warren Mayfield, Dustin Mitchell & Gabe Edny took care of it with a great score of 28 on the back nine..

By the concentration of
Keith Hulen, this shot
was "business time"
It looks like everyone is not only pretty enthusiastic about this Tuesday night event, but also that there is some "serious" business and "trash talk" going around: "hey, what you guys had?", "we had a 30, and lipped out many putts. We would have beat you!" Then  winners an and non winners get together at the Elk City Golf Club bar and exchange golf tales, scores and a couple of beers... all in good clean fun. The closest to the pin (#16) was won by Craig Martin  who the day before had aced the same hole during  an informal round while giving a playing lesson to some of our high school players.

COMING UP: May 1st (Sunday): 2-Person Team, Triple Format (best ball, scramble, alternate shots) Tournament. This tournament was a complete surprise to  Ramona and myself as it is a "welcoming tournament" for the new golf pro. I don't know what to say except a very sincere "THANK YOU" on behalf of both of us. Let's have some fun and hopefully I can play a shot or two with a few or all groups that day. As I understand, Brad Gilbert and Brian Carnes will do the cooking after the tournament... CAN'T WAIT!!

FYI, THIS IS AN OPEN TOURNAMENT AND WE WILL HAVE GROSS AND NET PRIZES, SO MAKE YOUR TEAM IN ANY WAY YOU SO DESIRE.

SEE YOU ON MAY 1st!! For more pictures, click the following link: http://cid-515395678268ef75.photos.live.com/play.aspx/20110419%20League?src=EMSHHM&Bpub=SN.Notifications

THE "GLAMOROUS" LIFE OF A CLUB PROFESSIONAL...

Many people tend to associate the term "PGA Professional" with someone who plays or played the PGA Tour. That is not so. PGA Professionals are business people that are associated with golf. Sure, some are very good players, but none make a living playing tournaments traveling from city to city and from major to major. In my case, about the closest I came to "fame", was hitting balls right next to Lee Trevino and Billy Casper (once each), making the cut twice in the Mexican Open and once in the Mexican PGA Championship, I once shot 61 on my home course (playing preferred lies) and 64 on a course in Tucson, AZ. Par was 69.... oh, and you have to count my expert caddying for my daughters as well. "We" qualified for several national championships, and "they" messed up some rounds.

Back to the two different professions: at one time, the PGA of America, the association I belong to, which was founded in 1916, ran the tour. In the early 70's, after it was evident that more and more non club professionals had been winning tournaments since the 50's (Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, Jack Nicklaus and others), the tour and the PGA of America decided to go separate ways: let the good players make history, let the club professionals do their job: manage, teach, promote, teach the rules, organize events, and other mundane things such as taking carts out for members, regriping their clubs, selling range balls and merchandise, and even being a baby sitter, and I don't mean of small children.

It was not an easy split. Deane Beaman, PGA Tour commissioner, called it the "Players' Tour" (very appropriately named), but the PGA of America has a lot of clout, and the word "PGA" was added and the term was changed to "PGA Tour". In short, the basic difference between a golf professional and a professional golfer should be evident: a professional golfer makes his living playing golf and getting his swing dissected by Johnny Miller and Peter Kostis, a golf professional is happy to get a couple of rounds a week, indeed, VERY HAPPY.... and helps others, including players who are better than himself figure out their game. On the light side of humor, here are some of the things a club professional should consider knowing in order to be successful:

What Isaac Newton had to do with golf
Net scores do matter to a 24 handicapper
John Daly does not play Hippo clubs, and..
Nick Price does not use the “E” club either
Where your pro-am partner hit his last tee shot
How to tell someone that he’ll never break 90
One handicappers are not very helpful in pro-ams
The place where all important people meet for coffee
How to understand the difference between a sincere question.and a test you didn't study for!
How to stop some guys from wearing pants with ducks on them
Expelling the course’s slowest player is a case that will probably not go to court
How to stop people from wearing pajamas to the golf course
The name of a good doctor, lawyer, a favorite restaurant, a good hotel, and if necessary, a bookie
All the Saturday and Sunday sports scores while your members are playing golf
How to explain to a parent that his child will not be the next Fred Couples
How to tell someone that you’d be OK if they preferred tennis over golf
How to give the right answer to questions from the W.G.A.’s membership.
How to explain 14 hour days to your daughter when she has a school play.
How to politely explain to people why you don’t want carts parked in a bad “lie”
How to tell a “slicer” that to correct his problem, he first has to aim farther right!
How to tell the difference between a Titleist NXT Distance and a Titleist NXT Tour
How to explain how come you are not on Tour after shooting a 61 on your home course
How to tell some golfers that all groups are full even if there are some twosomes around
The date, time and name of the person who made a divot on green #7 and who killed him
Who is married to someone’s ex so you don’t accidentally pair them together in a scramble
How to explain how were you able to earn your PGA card after an embarrassing round of 80 or higher.
How to explain to the MGA President that he lost a $5.00 Nassau because he doesn’t really understand the rules
How to explain to your child that you had to settle a rules dispute and that is why you were late to her school play...again!
How to tell a member that the greens are OK, but that he needs more spin in his wedge shots
How to remember the names of all 300+ bosses... all the time
How to break up a foursome into a threesome and a "onesome".
How to break a sixsome... and which ones to break
How to laugh at bad golf jokes that your had already heard anyway

HOW TO DEPART THE PREMISES, PREFERABLY UNDETECTED!!

So there, our job is not only easier than yours, but that is why it is also glamorous!

RESULTS: ELK CITY GIRLS & TUESDAY MEN'S SCRAMBLE..

Elk City Girls Team
Kelsi Wilson missing... for now only!

The Elk City High School Girls team hosted their annual event on Monday the 11th. The girls finished 4th among the bigger schools and 6th overall. Kelsi Wilson was low for the locals with a 95.

The team is young and are yet to develop a consistent game, but, by the weekly attendance we'v eseen, we know they are hard workers and will soon improve. No matter what, we are proud of you young ladies! Low team was Hinton, with a 340. Hinton was led by Maci Arrington who also shot the best individual score of the tournament, a nice 78.
Greg Dodson's chipping
excited partner!

The Tuesday Men's Scramble resumed for the 2011 season with 35 palyers in 8 teams. Low score of 28, belonged o the team of: Brandon Thomas, Jim Gilmore, Brett Hutson, Mike Cowan & Terry Nichols; .  A stroke behind, were Craig Martin, Eric Little, Cary Cummiford, Jeff Smoot & Charlie Kauk. Since the winning team did not win by two shots, the pot will carry over to Tuesday May 19th, where you only need to win by one stroke (every time a pot starts, the winning team has to do so by two shots).... PLAYING A QUICK NINE...

.. 1 Elk City Golf & CC is expanding a cart barn for the rental carts. For now, we have 15 rental carts for the season, the new barn will hold approx. 24 carts.

.. 2 So far, most people are checking in before going out. We appreciate your cooperation. It helps the club, it helps control of play and in the long run, it helps all members.

.. 3 Temporary teeing areas are a "necessary nuisance". Here is a stat for all: the USGA recommends at least 150 sq ft of usable teeing area for every 1,000 rounds of golf played, and double that amount in Par-3 Holes. By all estimates, Elk City Golf & CC has about 15,000 rounds a year. Do the math!

Taking a little time off
for some fun!
.. 4 Congratulations to Elk City Golf & CC member, Allen Robinson in his recent victory in the city's commissioner's election. He won by a margin of 2 to 1. In a golf match, he would have been done by Hole #15! It looks like golf will wait a little longer in his schedule, but not without benefit for the community.

They better not screw up!
.. 5 Recently, the club hosted the "President's Ball", this year for Joe Wynn. If you didn't attend, you missed a great dance and party, and you also missed (but should not surprise you), Ann Cowan doing just about everything, from getting the party ready, to waiting on tables, helping the staff, greeting the attendees, etc. If there is such a career as a “professional volunteer”, it is being redefined at a higher standard. As well, if you did not attend, you missed my 67 seconds speech which no one understood. It’s OK, all I said is that Ramona and I are very happy to be here and that we will try our best to follow all the Board’s directives to make your club successful.

..6 Which bring me to this: Thank you to all the Board, but especially to Cory Smith, who has been the most graceful, welcoming and professional “former golf professional” to deal with; a true “pro’s pro”. It's nice to have "heads up" on the "do's and dont's" and his insight.
What do you mean "only"
140 showed up?
..7 I don't know about you, but I truly enjoy seeing our practice area full of youngsters. It is almost like it is "natural", but there is nothing natural about it, it is a credit to the adults who receive these future adult golfers with open arms and encouraging words.

No words necessary, other than
"WANTED" (alive, of course!)
.. 8 Playing by the rules: I noticed during the High School Invitational that a visiting coach came to coach Garrett Mantle about "waving a rule" because of the windy conditions. To his credit, Mr. Mantle did not support the suggestion. Here is the deal: You play golf by the rules. Had the coach agreed, I would have intervened and cited Rule 1:3 (Agreement to waive the rules, which leads to disqualification of the players agreeing to wave the rules). It is bad enough that players are allowed to lift, clean and place in most of these events, stretching the option of "preferred lies" as suggested by the USGA when conditions are (very) bad (in their written suggestion, it clearly says that a player may not improve the line of play, such as taking a tree out of play). But conditions at Elk City Golf & CC ARE NOT BAD ENOUGH TO GUARANTEE "preferred lies".... THE RULES OF GOLF ARE FAIR: KNOW THEM AND PLAY BY THEM! Moving right along.....

..9 TO END, DON'T FORGET TO WATCH "THE MASTERS".

MORE GOOD NEWS FOR OUR YOUNG GOLFERS

Logan Gore
Look of determination
Unknown to most of us, some of our younger kids went to play a tournament just down the road at Sugar Creek, in Hinton, OK. Two of them did rather well: Logan Gore shot 79 and won the tournament and Carter Muntriff shot 95 and finished in the middle of the pack.

It looks like the common denominator for our successful golfers continues to be wrapped up in one word: PRACTICE!! ...

Carter Muntriff
With Logan, a regular at
the practice area
It also looks like coach Garrett Mantle will have some good players to choose from once his elite players graduate in a couple of years!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!

P.S. KEEP US INFORMED!!

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

Brock Walker stalking a putt on #4
The Elk City Boys High School Invitational turned into a test of survival as much as a test of golf. With a consistent wind of 35 mph, gusts of up to 60 mph, and temperatures in the low 50’s, you can throw away “par” 72 and just try to survive, get the round over, go get some hot chocolate, and go to the next tournament. Also, throw away par, and the good players are happy breaking 80.

Hole #7 Flagstick
We all knowthat there is no golf in Oklahoma if there isn’t any wind, and that is why states like Oklahoma and Texas consistently produce more good players than all the other states, but on Monday, it went beyond “wind” and it was hard to enjoy being out there. But over sixty kids played, endured the elements and finished. And some of them did very well. In total, there were 10 rounds of 79 or under, with Joby Gray (Elk City) and visiting cousin Logan Gray (El Reno) tying for first at 74; Logan won the playoff.

The Hunchback of Notredame?
No, it is the wind that got inside
his jacket!
Once more, Elk City’s team showed that they are serious contenders for a second straight state title as they won by found shots, 313 to 317 over Heritage Hall. Sure, they were playing at home, but in the last three outings they have a second and two firsts. Other scores from Elk City were: Keegan Hall – 79, Berek Dyson – 79, Brock Walker – 81, Bobby Babcock – 83 and Cody Lake – 85. Congratulations to all. It goes on to show that hard work pays off!

A special thanks goes to Elk City Golf & C.C. for allowing the kids to use the course for a full day, to Ann Cowan, Joe Wynn, Jack Morrison, Kenneth Shuelein, Leonb Stuart, Myra Baker, Alan Robison, Rusty Wilson and all those members who allowed the coaches to use their private carts, to coach Garrett Mantle, and to Inter Bank for providing lunch for players, coaches and guests.

WIND, RAIN OR SHINE...

Joby Gray (left) and Berek Dyson,
practicing in a cold, windy night in late March.
TODAY IS THE DAY.

The State Champions will host their High School Invitational. With Joby, Berek, KeeganBrock, Cody, Reid, and the rest, the team should be one of the favorites.

First you have talented Joby Gray and Berek Dyson, Joby is playing well, and Berek is known for his will to excel;  these two young men are often at the golf course practicing together, wind, rain or shine which shows their drive to win and determination to improve (you don't just go go out an score nine birdies or place second in the State Tournament by talent alone, but by practice, determination, love of competition, and most important, love of the game).

Then you have Cody Lake, Brock Walker, Reid Barber and Keegan Hall, the last one of whom is an enigma, since physically, he is probably the one with the most talent. Somehow, he needs to find out just how good he can be, by regaining the love for the game and challenging himself.

Coach Mantle will have a tough choice for 5th bag, maybe even for  4th bag on his "A" team today. BUT THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN KNOW IS TO COME OUT AND WATCH AND CHEER YOUR LOCAL TEAM!!! WIND RAIN OR SHINE, I'LL BE THERE, WILL YOU?

NO SURPRISES WHEN WEATHER IS WARM...

All you had to have was a nice day and we hosted over 100 rounds of golf in our first Saturday of April!

You knew it would be busy when the temperature reached 50 degrees before 7:00 a.m.. So, seeing Joby Gray, probably the most avid golfer in this town was not a total surprise, but it was that he was alone without any one of his teammates. Joby is not only an avid golfer, he seems to be in love with the game. Add that the kid has talent, so you may be hearing from him much more often in the near future.

Personally, I'd like to see him (and others in the team who share the passion and have the talent) play some USGA events, like qualify for the U.S. Amateur, the U.S. Publinx Championship and the U.S. Juniors. Tiger became Tiger by winning three straight U.S. Juniors followed by three straight U.S. Amateurs. Joby is good enough to give the U.S. Open Qualifier a good run as well. He is long enough and a pretty mature player. The experience gained in those events is unmatched!

Enough of Joby, there were another 108 players who used the course on Saturday! Even after it got windy, we were very busy. First time this season that we host over 100 players. That should give us an idea on what is coming up once the summer starts. After being a guest in "The Coaches Corner" of KECO courtesy of Garrett Mantle, Elk City's Golf Boys Coach, I decided that I should go out on the course and check things out.

You'd be surprised what you can find in a 30 minute "patrol" run around the golf course... for some pictures, click here on the following link:
